DigiScribe-XL – Microsoft DCOM

The DigiScribe-XL suite of products communicate using Microsoft DCOM, in its default state Microsoft DCOM will only allow members of the Administrators group to communicate.

Configuring DCOM

Follow the Configuring DCOM instructions to enable all users to communicate with the central dictation workstation.

  1. Open Component Services and expand the node, expand Computers and right click on My Computer. Select Properties from the context menu.
  2. Navigate to the Com Security tab on the My Computer Properties dialog box.
  3. Click the Edit Default button under Access Permissions.
  4. Add the Everyone and Anonymous groups to the list (if not already present) ensuring they both have Allow permissions for EVERY type of access in the permissions box and click OK.
  5. Click the Edit Limits button under Access Permissions.
  6. Add the Everyone and Anonymous groups to the list (if not already present) ensuring they both have Allow permissions for EVERY type of access in the permissions box and click OK.
  7. Click the Edit Default button under Launch and Activation Permissions.
  8. Add the Everyone and Anonymous groups to the list (if not already present) ensuring they both have Allow permissions for EVERY type of access in the permissions box and click OK.
  9. Click the Edit Limits button under Launch and Activation Permissions.
  10. Add the Everyone and Anonymous groups to the list (if not already present) ensuring they both have Allow permissions for EVERY type of access in the permissions box and click OK.
  11. Click OK to the My Computer Properties box.
  12. Expand the My Computer node and highlight DCOM Config.
  13. Locate the component named CMIS, right click it and select Properties.
  14. Change the Authentication Level to None and click the Security tab.
  15. Change the Configuration Permissions to Customize and click Edit.
  16. Add the Everyone and Anonymous groups to the list (if not already present) along with any other group specific to the site you are at ensuring all groups have Allow permissions for EVERY type of access in the permissions box, once complete click OK to the permissions and properties boxes.
  17. Locate the component named CscLicenseServer, right click it and select Properties.
  18. Change the Authentication Level to None and click the Security tab.
  19. Change the Configuration Permissions to Customize and click Edit.
  20. Add the Everyone and Anonymous groups to the list (if not already present) along with any other group specific to the site you are at ensuring all groups have Allow permissions for EVERY type of access in the permissions box, once complete click OK to the permissions and properties boxes.
  21. Restart all Crescendo related services, restarting the workstation will have the same effect.

Resetting DCOM

Follow the Resetting DCOM instructions prior to following the Configuring DCOM instructions if you are changing the domain and/or workgroup the central dictation workstation resides in. This will ensure the Everyone and Anonymous groups linked to DCOM have the correct security identifiers.

  1. Open Component Services and expand the node, expand Computers and right click on My Computer. Select Properties from the context menu.
  2. Navigate to the Com Security tab on the My Computer Properties dialog box.
  3. Click the Edit Default button under Access Permissions.
  4. Remove the Everyone and Anonymous groups from the list and click OK.
  5. Click the Edit Limits button under Access Permissions.
  6. Remove the Everyone and Anonymous groups from the list and click OK.
  7. Click the Edit Default button under Launch and Activation Permissions.
  8. Remove the Everyone and Anonymous groups from the list and click OK.
  9. Click the Edit Limits button under Launch and Activation Permissions.
  10. Remove the Everyone and Anonymous groups from the list and click OK.
  11. Click OK to the My Computer Properties box.
  12. Close Component Services but DO NOT restart or log off of the workstation.
  13. Perform the steps in the Configuring DCOM section.

NOTES:

As all Crescendo related services rely on DCOM you must restart each service after making changes, if you are unsure how to or which services to restart restarting the workstation will also have the same effect.
